Talk about your inconvenient truths. According to 2013 statistics, the year saw a record number of background checks performed, correlating inevitably with higher gun sales. A little over 21 million background checks went through the system, proving that Americans are more willing than ever to keep a gun in the home.
At the same time, the FBI reports that crime actually dropped in 2013. Their November 10th report shows that violent crime fell 4.4 percent in 2013 while property crime fell 4.1 percent. Could there be a positive correlation between higher legal gun sales and lower crime rates? Could it be that liberals who think guns are the problem are actually making things worse for law-abiding citizens?
That might be a stretch – correlation does not prove causation – but it does seem to prove that, at the very least, higher gun sales do not lead to higher violent crime rates. And that flies directly in the face of liberal propaganda to the contrary. That’s enough to stand behind the Second Amendment as it was written.
Anyway, it’s good to know that the Constitution-burners on the left will be packing it in. Faced with these kinds of numbers, they’ll have no choice but to go back to their caves and think of another way to limit American freedom.
That probably won’t happen, seeing as we’ve known that higher gun sales have a positive correlation with lower crime rates for some time. Last year, the Bureau of Justice Statistics released figures that showed a 39 percent drop in gun-related homicides from 1993 to 2011. Non-deadly gun crimes dropped even more dramatically: 69 percent.
Gun sales spiked when Obama took office, but they had been on the rise even before that. From 2002 – 2011, there was a 54 percent increase in the number of NICS background checks, and they didn’t all take place in 2008. Once more, this proves that higher gun sales do not cause violent crime to skyrocket as the left would have us believe. While it’s premature to theorize that higher gun sales actually cause lower crime rates, we can say almost definitively that they don’t have the opposite effect.
But this was never about crime to begin with. When have liberals ever cared about cracking down on crime? That’s been a Republican rallying point for as long as there has been a right and a left. Democrats don’t care about stopping gun violence; they want what they always want: a bigger, stronger, more powerful federal government. Centralized power is threatened by an armed citizenry. Therefore, guns have to go.
But Democrats have a problem. Namely, Americans are getting wise to their games. Thus, they’ve largely stopped trying to enact gun control measures from Washington. Now, the anti-gun left has started a state-by-state plan to pass restrictions on the micro-level. And with a big win in their back pockets – Washington State’s I-594 – they are more confident than ever.
To stop them, we must remain vigilant, informed, and politically active. The war for our rights wages ever on.
