Liberal politicians and pundits are nervously biting their fingernails this week. After Attorney General William Barr gave a stunning speech at the Federalist Society on Friday, Democrats know conclusively that we have a real law-and-order man at the top of the Justice Department. Worse for them, Barr proved conclusively that he knows exactly what the Democratic Party is up to. Barr’s speech not only suggests that he has the left’s number, it may even hint that he knows some big things are coming down the pike in terms of his investigation into the origins of the Russia probe.
“I deeply admire the American presidency as a political and constitutional institution,” he said. “Unfortunately over the past several decades, we have seen a steady encroachment on executive authority by the other branches of the government.”
Barr said this lawlessness has only grown more intense since Donald Trump assumed power.
“Immediately after President Trump won the election, opponents inaugurated what they called the ‘resistance’ and they rallied around an explicit strategy of using every tool and maneuver to sabotage the functioning of the executive branch and his administration,” he continued. “The cost of this constant harassment is real.”
Barr said that Americans should be alarmed by the use of that term.
“Now resistance is the language used to describe insurgency against rule imposed by an occupying military power. It obviously connotes that the government is not legitimate. This is a very dangerous and, indeed, incendiary notation to import into the politics of a democratic republic,” Barr said. “They essentially see themselves engaged in a war to cripple, by any means necessary, a duly elected government.”
It should come as no surprise to note that Democrats were in full-outrage mode after Barr’s speech.
Barr said that Democrats couldn’t delegitimize Trump’s presidency by pointing to his departure from the normal way of things.
“The fact is, that, yes, while the president has certainly thrown out the traditional beltway playbook and punctilio, he was upfront about what he was going to do and the people decided that he was going to serve as president,” he said.
With the media laser-focused on helping Democrats convince the public that there’s actually a “there” there with this whole Ukraine business, it’s comforting to know we have a fierce defender of truth in the Attorney General’s office. He sees through the Democratic Party’s tricks, and he sees them for the anti-democratic threat that they are. Hopefully, most Americans are beginning to see the same thing.
