Angered over the news that Special Counsel Robert Mueller was investigating him personally for obstruction of justice, President Trump took to Twitter on Thursday for a series of afternoon tweets that reminded readers of the 2016 election. Why? Because Trump brought up his old arch-enemy, Hillary Clinton, wondering aloud why her own ties to the Russian regime were not under as much scrutiny as his campaign’s supposed behind-the-scenes shenanigans.
“Why is it that Hillary Clinton’s family and Dems dealings with Russia are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?” Trump asked.
The president then reminded the country about the many shady incidents surrounding Clinton’s email situation.
“Crooked H destroyed phones w/hammer, ‘bleached’ emails, and had husband meet w/AG days before she was cleared,” he said. “And they talk about obstruction?”
Earlier in the day, Trump blasted the Mueller story specifically, reaffirming his stance – that the Russia investigation was turning into the “single greatest witch hunt in American political history.”
Trump ally Newt Gingrich also blasted the Washington Post story, saying that investigators were now far afield of the original purpose of the inquiry – which was supposedly to determine how the Russians interfered in the election.
“What happened to Russia? Anti-Trump focus of ‘special’ counsel should now be clear. Mueller is the ‘anti-Trump special counsel,’” Gingrich wrote on Twitter. “Mueller is now clearly the tip of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency. Mueller is setting up a dragnet of obstruction, financial questions and every aspect of Trump’s life and his associates’ lives. Very dangerous. The brazen redefinition of Mueller’s task tells you how arrogant the deep state is and how confident it is it can get away with anything.”
Gingrich and Trump are absolutely right, and you can see it clearly if you read the Washington Post story. They aren’t just talking about Russia anymore. They’re looking into the financial dealings of Trump’s associates and the entire Trump organization. They are going to turn over every rock until they find something.
And even if they don’t find anything worthy of impeachment, they’re going to leak every halfway-suspicious finding to the media, which will run with it like it’s the Holy Grail of Trump’s downfall. And then when the dust settles, they’ll leak something else. It doesn’t even matter if these things are true or false, because the point of all of this is just to keep Trump on defense and pave the way for a thousand 2018/2020 political commercials. This is a political war, and they’re using the legal mechanisms of the U.S. government to wage it.
