Only the coldest heart could not be thawed by the memorial service for Officer Rafael Ramos. More than 20,000 officers and civilians gathered in New York City to form a kind of counterprotest while also honoring Ramos and his partner, Wenjian Liu. The two NYPD officers were gunned down by a criminal who had been radicalized by the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. On the day of the funeral, outside Christ Tabernacle Church, thousands of officers showed solidarity with the victims while also insisting that Blue Lives Matter as well.
While many officials called for the Garner/Brown protests to take a breather out of respect for the fallen officers, no one was willing to comply. Why would they? They’ve been fed a neverending spool of lies and exaggerations by the major news organizations, by liberal agitators, and by politicians like Barack Obama and Bill de Blasio. To them, this is a clear case of us vs. them. The white police racists on one hand, and the innocent, oppressed black man on the other. If everything the liberal community said about these shootings was correct, the ongoing protests would be justified. Hell, the shootings of Ramos and Liu would be justified. If America was as evil and racist as people like Melissa Harris-Perry, Al Sharpton, and Eric Holder believe it to be, anything short of all-out revolution would be negligent.
The problem, of course: it’s all a lie. All of it. Michael Brown died because he made the idiotic mistake of attacking a police officer. Eric Garner died because he had a number of health problems. Looking at the video, their use of force in taking Garner down seems excessive. But unless you’re a police officer working in some of the country’s most dangerous areas, you don’t have any idea what these guys face on a daily basis. There’s little room for error. Is it a shame what happened to Garner? Of course. But he was not a victim of racism.
What a joke for The Atlantic to claim that police brutality comes from America’s support for systemic racism. “We are the ones who barred black people from leaving those ghettos,” a columnist said. Huh. Since when, I wonder? Are there fences around those ghettos? Are there not stories of black people who started with nothing to become rich, powerful, and successful? As Anthony Hopkins said in The Edge, “What one man can do, another can do.”
But no, the Black Lives Matter liberals don’t want to hear that. Instead, they actually claim that such stories of success obscure the truth of America’s racist oppression. This is just the kind of disempowering, victimhood crap that keeps this cycle of black poverty going. Liberal programs and policies have been working overtime for more than 50 years, all of them supposedly aimed at helping black America. And by their own account, things are hardly better. So what gives? It’s not working? Then, do you think, just maybe, it’s time to try something else?
Nah. Let’s keep telling young black men and women that the police are racists, Republicans want black people to stay in their fenced-in ghettos, and that the only hope for black people lies in more government assistance. If that message hasn’t worked yet, it’s probably only a matter of time. Maybe give it another 50 years. Hell, give it another 100. In the meantime, black America, why not keep voting Democrat?
