On Thursday, BuzzFeed News published what would, if true, be one of the most detrimental bombshells yet when it comes to the continued presidency of Donald Trump. In the story, the reporters cited unnamed sources within the Justice Department to make an extraordinary claim: That President Trump directed his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to lie to Congress about when negotiations over Trump Tower Moscow had ended. The story said that Cohen was on record with Robert Mueller about this being the case, and that furthermore, there were documents and internal Trump Organization emails confirming this devastating claim.
As more than a few media outlets pointed out, if this story were true, it would give Congress significant ammunition to impeach Trump. This would amount to nothing less than witness tampering and obstruction of justice, and it would come very close to the exact same impeachment charges drawn up against Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.
Now, we know that Cohen’s word is worth less than the paper it’s printed on. He’s a verified liar who will say or do anything to minimize his own impending prison sentence. BUT…if there is indeed independent evidence verifying that Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress, that’s a whole ‘nother ball of wax.
But despite insinuating in their story that they’d lain eyes on this independent evidence, the reporters have since admitted that no…not they haven’t. In an interview with CNN, Anthony Cormier, one of the journalists on the story, told Alisyn Camerota that he never saw the evidence.
“Not personally,” he admitted when asked.
“The folks we have talked to — two officials we have spoken to are fully, 100 percent read into that aspect of the Special Counsel’s investigation,” he continued, hoping to retain the story’s credibility (and preserve his career). “[Our sources] have been working the Trump Moscow tower portion of the investigation…before Mueller. So they had access to a number of different documents, 302 reports which are interview reports. That stuff was compiled as they began to look at who the players were speaking with, how those negotiations went, who all from the Trump organization and outside the organization were involved in getting that tower set up.”
So, we’ll see. Maybe this will turn out to be the best advanced insight into Mueller’s investigation we’ve had thus far, or maybe it will turn out to be an epic Fake News fail, the likes of which BuzzFeed may never recover from.
It’s a shame that the liberal news media has so disgraced itself that it’s even a question.
