Under new freedom to conduct their deportation operations in accordance with U.S. law, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are reportedly scoping out courtrooms in San Francisco and Los Angeles for immigrants who may need a first-class ticket back to their home countries. Knowing they’ll get no cooperation from local law enforcement authorities, ICE officials aren’t waiting around for police to detain illegal immigrants and then shield them from deportation. They’re going right to where the action is.
Naturally, the leftist judges who populate the California Supreme Court have a problem with that. Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye wrote to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly this week, asking them to put a leash on their enforcement officers.
“Courthouses should not be used as bait in the necessary enforcement of our country’s immigration laws,” she wrote. “Enforcement policies that include stalking courthouses and arresting undocumented immigrants, the vast majority of whom pose no risk to public safety, are neither safe nor fair. They not only compromise our core value of fairness but they undermine the judiciary’s ability to provide equal access to justice. I respectfully request that you refrain from this sort of enforcement in California’s courthouses.”
Well, there’s a simple way to resolve this – to the extent that it’s actually happening in the first place, that is. Get San Francisco and Los Angeles to start following U.S. law when it comes to illegal immigration, and ICE agents won’t be forced to go to these extremes. Because the judge is right, in a way: If this becomes a common tactic for ICE agents, illegal immigrants will simply stop showing up to their court dates, and you just get lawlessness on top of lawlessness.
But don’t pretend this is a problem of the Trump administration’s creation. This is what the federal government is being forced to resort to in these cities where the rule of law is nothing more than a suggestion. The sanctuary status of these cities is not only threatening to the residents, it poses a danger to the U.S. as a whole. It serves as one more carrot to dangerous (and, more often, societally useless) illegal immigrants, who know there is an oasis waiting for them if they can sneak past Border Patrol.
Everything Trump has promised or done is a reaction to what our politicians have FAILED to do for thirty years. Don’t blame the janitor for the mess.
