In a press conference on Wednesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom admitted that he and other Democrats see the coronavirus pandemic as an “opportunity” to push more progressive policies and shift the way politics are done in his state and around the country. Echoing similar remarks from South Carolina Democrat Jim Clyburn, Newsome told reporters that it was time to rethink the way the government plays a role in the lives of the American people.
“Absolutely,” he said, “we see this as an opportunity to reshape the way we do business and how we govern.”
Newsom’s admission came after a reporter asked the governor if he saw “potential” in the current crisis to usher in a “new progressive era” in local and national politics.
“That shouldn’t put shivers up the spines of one party or the other,” he said. “I think it’s an opportunity anew for both parties to come together and meet this moment and really start to think more systemically, not situationally, not just about getting out of this moment.”
No, no. Why would Republicans feel a shiver listening to Newsome talk about using the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to address income inequality?
“Something was fundamentally flawed in that global context, manifested quite acutely here in the state of California, the richest and poorest state,” he lamented.
Clyburn, you may recall, told members of the Democratic caucus that the Phase 3 stimulus bill presented the party with “a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.” That was right around the time that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was crafting a bill stuffed with unrelated nonsense like a $15 minimum wage requirement, federal control over elections, and untold millions for PBS and the Kennedy Center.
Oh, and she wanted to slap emissions restrictions on airlines – a move that was so egregious that we got this stunning quote from Saikat Chakrabarti, one of the most extreme radical leftists in the country: “I helped write the #GreenNewDeal and I think this is ridiculous. The tiny little emissions standard increase doesn’t even do anything meaningful to stave off climate change and gives the @GOP leverage to get rid of real help for working people. Solve the problem at hand.”
When the guy who “discovered” AOC is telling you that you’re out to lunch, you know you’ve blundered into some noxious territory indeed.
How opening up borders, emptying prisons, protecting abortion clinics, and doubling down on identity politics will help us defeat the coronavirus, we have no idea. But this is what the Democrats have come up with so far. Let’s hope voters remember where the party’s priorities were when they go to the polls in November. We would be in truly dire straits right now if they were in charge.
