See if you can spot the logical inconsistency.
When it comes to Islam, here’s the left’s take on groups like ISIS: We must be careful not to lump all Muslims in with radical jihadists or even Islamists because to do so would be to play right into the hands of the terrorists. In other words, if we go around profiling Muslims or calling all of them extremist, violent savages who will kill you for drawing a cartoon, eventually they will be driven right into the welcoming arms of the Islamic State. Rational, peaceful, moderate-minded individuals will be so outraged at Trump’s use of a phrase like “radical Islamic terror” that a switch will flip in their heads. Next thing you know, these loving Muslims will be trading in their prayer rugs for pressure cookers. America beware!
But if that’s the logic, then how does it square with the left’s relentless attacks on Republicans, Trump supporters, and even the entire white American community? Because there (and only there), we see that the left actually does believe in the concept of collective guilt that they denounce in all other scenarios. There, we get columns like this one in the Chicago Tribune from Marisa Novara. And like so many of these columns, this one is written by a white person. When a reformist Muslim writes this kind of thing, the left castigates them with “Uncle Tom” insults. When a white liberal does it, they are praised as the very embodiment of progressivism.
“Denouncing acts of blatant hatred and bigotry is easy,” she writes. “But those of us who are white people don’t need to carry a torch to be part of the problem. The subjugation of people of color happens every day by those who would never march with citronella torches or drive a car through a throng of innocent protesters, by people who would recoil at being called racist.
“Subjugation occurs by white people across the Chicago region who protest public and affordable housing under the polite cover of parking and density concerns; by white people across the state of Illinois who, knowing we are 50th in school funding equity, stand in the way of a bill that even timidly moves us away from penalizing poor students; and by white people across the country who voted for and still support a president who took days to condemn white supremacy,” she continues.
Of course, catch people like this on a different day and they’ll insist that white people moving into a predominately black neighborhood is “gentrification.” So there’s really no way to escape blame, is there?
We don’t know if whites are being radicalized by this nonsense…but if they are, the left should have known what to expect. After all, they’re the ones who have been making this very argument for years when it comes to Islam.
