Bill Clinton once called the Hay Literary Festival a “Woodstock of the Mind.” The festival, which combines rock ‘n’ roll and reading in a unique way that draws thousands to its various events, is in full swing over in Wales. And while it’s cool that a nerd fest like this can still draw people interested in reading something more substantial than tweets, it has unfortunately turned into Woodstock in more ways than it probably needed to.
Though Hay invites writers from all over the spectrum, it is an undeniably liberal-leaning event. Perhaps that’s because artists tend to hew liberal in the first place. Whatever the reason, it affords us a good glimpse at what the current slate of liberal intellectuals are trying to do to make the world a “better place.” It should come as no surprise to see climate change become one of the hot topics.
At this year’s festival, a panel discussion took place featuring childrens authors who are working climate change into their fiction. They even have a little name for this: “Cli-Fi.” If that isn’t enough to turn your stomach, wait until you read what these authors are saying about their work.
“I like writing for children because their minds are still forming,” said David Thorpe, the author of a novel called Stormteller, a story in which Wales is destroyed by the effects of global warming. “They are asking all sorts of questions about how the world is working. Their minds haven’t been tainted by ideological bias, they are still open minded about it.”
Their minds haven’t been tainted by ideological bias…so what better time to get in there and start the process! Thorpe goes on to say that these books give him a chance to buck the status quo. “You can try to be seriously subversive and try to infect their minds with these viral ideas that they can explore on their own to make it exciting. When I was that age I loved having my mind boggled.”
Saci Lloyd, author of The Carbon Diaries, agreed with Thorpe’s view. Lloyd insisted that it was essential to keep the stories engaging enough so that kids wouldn’t notice that they were actually learning about the devastating effects of climate change.
These authors, along with the rest of the left, aren’t even slightly concerned with whether or not they are right about climate change. They only want to win at this point. This debate left the rails a long time ago. The left has finally found the secret key to the kingdom, and they are going to exploit it for all it is worth. After years of accusing Republicans are playing the fear card to win elections, they have turned into the biggest Chicken Littles of all. They are literally warning against the end of the world. And their solutions just happen to fit perfectly with their usual pro-government agenda. What are the odds…
It’s too bad, because there are plenty of reasons to pursue better technology. But you don’t need the world united in a movement to do that. It happens on its own. The second something comes along to make the internal combustion engine passé, we will jump all over it. When an energy source comes along that is cheaper, better, and more readily available than oil, we will switch in a heartbeat. But these liberals want to rush us along, no matter what kind of devastation it leads to in the meantime.
When you have the truth on your side, you don’t have to brainwash kids into believing it. The truth makes itself known. If these liberals are scared that kids will grow up to become “deniers,” maybe they should ask themselves why their favorite theory is so easy to dismiss.
