We’re not entirely sure what the Center for Sustainable Development is or what purpose is serves on the campus of Columbia University, but it sounds like the kind of nonsense place that we would expect an egghead, Trump-hating professor to work at. The director of the center is a man named Jeffrey Sachs, who just penned an op-ed for CNN.com warning us that President Donald Trump is taking this nation down the road to tyranny.
Yes, the left is still hammering this old nail.
“Donald Trump holds the grandiose belief that only he should rule America,” Sachs writes without evidence. “Unchecked by cowed or complicit Republicans in Congress, Trump invokes executive authority to alter policies and practices long established by law and treaty.”
See, when President Obama did that, the left was all about it. But when Trump reversed it, it tarnishes both “law and treaty” and makes him into an individual who believes he should be a dictator above the laws of God and man.
But please, Professor Sachs, do continue.
“The list of one-man actions grows rapidly,” he writes. “Trump is single-handedly imposing hundreds of billions of dollars of tariffs — that is, taxes — on imported goods from key US allies and China, without any explicit or implicit Congressional backing.”
Yeah, well, that’s because it is within his right as president to govern over those tariffs…? Still waiting for the moment when Sachs explains how Trump is taking the U.S. towards tyranny. Maybe it will be in the next paragraph.
Hmm, no, that’s the one where Sachs whines about Trump pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal – a deal that Obama signed – ahem – “without any explicit or implicit Congressional backing.”
Nope, that’s a listmania paragraph where Sachs bashes Trump for pulling out of the Paris Agreement (another debacle that Obama got us into without congressional approval), slams him for the travel ban (an order that the Supreme Court has upheld as being fully within the scope of executive power), and criticizes him for moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, which is, whether Sachs knows it or not, actual U.S. law. Trump is actually the first president since the mid-90s to OBEY and CARRY OUT the law in this case, which to our minds makes him less of a tyrant than those who came before him.
“Not all is lost,” Sachs assures us. “Special Counsel Robert Mueller and lower courts may still stand up to the President, even though the Supreme Court has become a predictable 5-4 backer of almost limitless presidential authority.”
Don’t worry, America: We can be saved from the tyranny of a duly-elected President by an unelected lawyer! Take heart!
Parents, if you send your kids to Columbia University, make sure you keep them away from the Center for Sustainable Development, whatever it is. Its director is a silly man, if not an outright idiot.
