A Democrat congresswoman who recently said that adding a citizenship question to the census was an attempt to “make America white again” is in the news today for coming to the defense of a 15x-arrested illegal immigrant who has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The problem? ICE took Diogenes Pinzon into custody at the Brooklyn Criminal Courthouse, where he was present to answer for domestic violence and robbery charges. That, to Democrats, is a violation of trust with the illegal immigrant community – a trust that is apparently important…for some reason.
“Extremely concerning to hear that ICE agents targeted an undocumented immigrant just outside Brooklyn Criminal Court this morning,” Rep. Nydia Velasquez tweeted. “Such actions by ICE have no place in our City & I will be monitoring the situation carefully.”
Have no fear, folks. She’s on the case.
Velasquez was not, alas, the only liberal upset by ICE’s actions. According to the New York Daily News, the arrest of Pinzon was enough to send some 50 lawyers to the supply store for protest placards and magic markers.
“We are appalled by yet another courthouse arrest by ICE,” said the Legal Aid Society and Brooklyn Defender Services in a joint statement. “If the people we represent cannot safely appear in court to participate in their own defense — and, further, are sanctioned with warrants for not appearing — then the integrity of the whole system must be questioned.”
“This is intolerable,” they continued. “Something must change and it must change now. Courts must protect all those they hail into their chambers, not feed them into the Trump Administration’s mass detention and deportation machine.”
Well, it’s neither intolerable nor appalling. It is for the protection of both illegal immigrants and officers that ICE is performing these courthouse arrests. Defendants must go through metal detectors to get into their hearings, meaning they will not pose a weapon-backed threat to the arresting agents. Furthermore, these immigrants have – almost by definition – committed a crime (other than coming to this country without permission), therefore making them a high-priority target for deportation.
But hey, if Democrats really want to make sticking up for domestic abusers and robbers their M.O. as they head into the November midterms, we encourage them to go for it.
