It’s been something else to watch Democrats slowly rally around Bernie Sanders’ ultimate fix for everything that’s wrong with the American healthcare system: A single-payer plan known as the Medicare for All bill. But while these Democrats tell us about all of the evils and ills that are currently plaguing the insurance market, we should probably not forget which party it was that put us in this situation to begin with.
Why should any American trust Democrats to fix the very problems they created in the first place? Why would anyone believe that the solution to today’s terrible Big Government healthcare system is…more government?
Well, it probably shouldn’t surprise us. This is the Democratic Party’s entire M.O. Destroy something with terrible ideas, fix it by doubling down on the very “solutions” that created the mess, and keep the situation going like that until everything implodes in a heaping cloud of taxpayer-funded dust. It’s quite the racket.
Unfortunately, when it comes to healthcare, Sanders’ socialist calls for a single-payer system are beginning to slowly turn the tide of public opinion. Americans of a certain age are old enough and wise enough to understand that nothing comes for free, but Millennials are particularly susceptible to the Sanders magic. Which is why, of course, many Democrat Party presidential hopefuls are making sure to rub elbows with the Vermont senator and feign interest in his universal healthcare plan. But unless Republicans can actually repeal Obamacare and give healthcare back to the people, it’s only a matter of time before an alternative plan like Medicare-for-All catches enough political headwind to make it feasible.
And that would mean real trouble for this country.
If you want an example of how single-payer systems work, look no further than our British allies. They have had such a system for years, and it is imploding before their very eyes. Just recently, a subsidiary of the government-run healthcare service announced a ban on certain surgeries for anyone who is obese or is a smoker. This is what rationed healthcare looks like. This is what conservatives warned Americans about when it came to Obamacare. It may not have come true in that instance, but it is a real and present threat when it comes to a single-payer system. There’s only so much money to go around, even if you raise taxes through the roof.
“I think we are going to see more and more decisions like this,” said NHS administrator Chris Hopson told The Telegraph. “It’s the only way providers are going to be able to balance their books.”
Those decisions will be for American bureaucrats to make if we let Sanders and the Democrats “fix” the problems with our healthcare system. And even when we’ve rationed out all of the borderline cases, there still won’t be enough money to pay for every American citizen. Our debts will spiral even further out of control, our taxes will swell to extraordinary heights, and we will, sooner or later, face an economic crisis of unprecedented proportions. All of this, while our actual healthcare gets worse and worse.
Republicans, you have an opportunity to save us from that fate. Do it now, while you still have the power.
