The racial justice cry of the year may be “defund the police,” but a new poll from Gallup highlights what we already knew: These are the views of an extremely tiny – if ridiculously loud – minority of Americans. Indeed, even among black Americans, the idea of defunding or disbanding the police is extraordinarily unpopular. According to the poll, more than 80% of black people want police presence in their neighborhood to either stay the same or increase.
The poll asked American adults if they wanted police in their communities to ramp up their presence, reduce it, or keep it the same. 61% of black respondents said they would like to keep the police presence in their neighborhoods at the same level that it is today. White Americans said the same thing at a rate of 71%. Overall, 67% of respondents favored keeping police presence at current levels.
Among black adults, similar minorities expressed a desire to reduce and increase police presence in their neighborhoods. 20% want an increase, 19% want a decrease.
A preference to keep police presence the same, however, doesn’t necessarily translate to a rosy view of law enforcement among black Americans. The poll found that only 20% of black adults are confident that they will be given courtesy and respect by the police.
“This could either stem from Black Americans’ own negative experiences with the police or from their familiarity with people who have had negative encounters with law enforcement,” Gallup reported. “It’s not so much the volume of interactions Black Americans have with the police that troubles them or differentiates them from other racial groups, but rather the quality of those interactions.”
Well, if you’re looking for a place to begin the work of reform, this seems like a pretty good place to start. The big problem may be less about shootings and brutality and more about…politeness. Improve the – bedside manner? – of police officers, and maybe we’ll be able to avoid some of the outlandish, nation-destroying policies preferred by Black Lives Matter and their Democratic Party enablers. It’s certainly worth a shot. Hell, anything we can do to turn back this creeping Marxist revolution is worth trying at this point.
