There was once a time when Geraldo Rivera seemed like he had a modicum of sense. Those days are over, though, and today’s Geraldo sounds more and more like a typical liberal. And like most of them, he thinks the tragedy in Oregon is a symptom of our lax approach to gun control. Taking to Twitter after the shooting, Geraldo said:
The mass murder at Umpqua again reveals we are a gun sick nation. All the 2d Amendment bullshit aside, the gun lobby controls the country, and allows armed maniacal lunatics to roam free and kill.
Yeesh. To paraphrase the president, is there anyone who actually buys this argument? And what, exactly, is “bullshit” about the Second Amendment? What other rights protected by the Constitution does Geraldo consider BS? What laws would he or any other Democrat enact that would prevent “armed maniacal lunatics” from getting their hands on guns? Background checks? Hmm, Christopher Mercer passed at least one of those. What else ya got?
Geraldo declines to say. Instead, he says that Umpqua Community College should have had armed guards on hand.
Cops are great, but unless someone is right there, armed and ready, locked and loaded, innocents will continue to be slaughtered by gun-empowered, penis-envying, disgruntled, self & life-hating, sicko creeps who got someone devoid of conscience to sell or give them a deadly weapon with which to take the lives of people much better than they.
Geraldo is a little closer to the mark here, and he’s probably right that we need more armed security forces in places where people gather. But that doesn’t get to the heart of the issue, which is that every American should have the right to defend themselves at all times. Armed guards are a good start, but what are a couple of guards going to do when the shooting starts halfway across campus? They’ll be on the scene faster than the police, but will they get there quickly enough to save your life? Are you willing to take that chance?
But let’s also talk about this other remark that Geraldo buried in his rant. “Sicko creeps who got someone devoid of conscience to sell or give them a deadly weapon…” That’s a pretty slanderous statement to make. There’s no current indication that Mercer got his guns from people who knew what he was capable of. That’s not the way this goes down. And while there are instances, like Newtown, where we can question the wisdom of the parents of these killers, we can’t turn around and throw gun sellers under the bus. They aren’t responsible for every gun that goes out the door, and it’s ridiculous to argue otherwise.
If Mercer had killed 10 people by running them over in the parking lot, would we be talking about car control right now? A murderer has no shortage of options when it comes to weaponry. And until the gun control crowd is ready to go full-authoritarian and ban all guns, their background checks and assault rifle bans aren’t going to do anything to quell the violence. Since that would be impossible both politically and realistically, we might as well start talking about ideas that will actually work.
God, this country would be great if there were no liberals. So much would get done. So much less time would be spent on fantasy. So many lives would be saved.
But, like Geraldo, we’re just dreaming now.
