Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN) sent an official letter of request to the Department of Justice on Wednesday, asking Attorney General William Barr to initiate an investigation into a recent rash of vandalism against Catholic churches and religious statues across the U.S. In the letter, Fleischmann asked Barr to “continue to protect religious freedom and combat religious discrimination in the United States.”
“Today, I sent a letter to AG Barr urging the DOJ to protect religious freedom & combat religious discrimination in the U.S. My letter comes after numerous reports of vandalism at Catholic churches across the nation, including an incident in Chattanooga,” Fleischmann tweeted.
Included in Fleischmann’s tweet was the letter he sent to Barr. In it, the Tennessee Republican warned that the growing incidents of vandalism represent a disturbing pattern that could herald trouble for Catholics around the country.
“Since June, there have been nearly a dozen reported attacks on Catholic churches around the nation. These disturbing attacks range from arson to the beheading of a statue of the Virgin Mary,” he wrote. “I find these attacks to be a disturbing trend, happening in multiple areas across the nation, including within my own congressional district.
“In times of uncertainty we naturally turn to religion for comfort and peace, something many Americans are seeking as we combat COVID-19, but these attacks add another level of distress for many across our nation,” he continued.
In a conversation with the Washington Examiner, Fleischmann said you couldn’t underestimate the kind of criminal mentality that would lead one to destroy something of religious value.
“These people who would desecrate any house of worship — whether it is a Catholic church or any other house of worship — need to know that it won’t be tolerated. And I think it rises to the level of a hate crime,” he told the paper.
“I would like to have a recognition that this problem exists, it persists, and sadly, it is not isolated to one city or one state,” Fleischmann continued. “I think it needs to be looked at very carefully and addressed for the danger that it is.”
As Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made clear last week, when she called a statue of Catholic St. Damien a “symbol of white supremacy,” Antifa and their likeminded cohorts definitely have Christianity in mind as they pursue their decimation of everything that makes America what it is. They are trying to destroy the family, the police, the education system, religion, and anything else that stands in the way of creating their new, socialist, secular state.
If we want to keep our nation the way it is, we have no choice but to fight back. Hard.
