Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus said Monday that the liberal media should congratulate itself for pumping nothing but mass hysteria into the American public since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Marcus appeared on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show that night to accuse the media of doing very little for Americans other than riling them up with unnecessary panic and division over the COVID-19 outbreak.
“The media’s done a wonderful job in frightening America,” he said.
Marcus said that the country should ignore the doom-and-gloom news and pay attention to the facts of this virus. That, he said, meant ensuring that at-risk populations – including and most specifically the elderly – are protected from infection.
“My age bracket is really the problem,” said the 91-year-old Marcus. “If we take care of my age bracket, that is 70 or above, I think that we can end a lot of the problems that are out there. People that are 70 or above have to be so careful because you are compromised in many different ways. But we’re only a small portion of the population, and we’re closing down everybody in addition to the schools.”
Marcus said that the country should look to states like Florida and Georgia that have begun reopening in phased steps that take social distancing and precautionary measures seriously…without going overboard with plans that will tank the economy and send people spiraling into bankruptcy, unemployment, and poverty.
“What they did is a perfect example of thinking and understanding that people need to get out of the house, needed to start their businesses again, needed to go to work again,” he said. “But there are bureaucrats all over the country in the blue states that are still closed, and God knows when they’ll open. Those people, they are still struggling and it is a desperate time for many of them.”
Marcus understands what far too few Democrats seem to get, which is that this doesn’t need to be a black/white choice: Open up or stay locked in your homes. In fact, it cannot be that, or we won’t have a country to come back to when this virus finally runs its course. Yes, things are more dangerous out there than they used to be. Yes, it makes sense to take reasonable precautions. But for us to completely run ourselves into another Great Depression because of fear and panic? That would be true madness.
