Spurred on by Black Lives Matter, dozens of celebrities in an open letter, and more than a few leftist pundits on cable news, we’re finally beginning to see a glimmer of purpose in the George Floyd protests/riots. Their goal is becoming clear. The aim of this uprising is no longer about reforming police, holding perpetrators of unnecessary brutality to account, or anything else that might be deemed halfway reasonable. No, we’re beyond that.
The goal is now to completely “defund the police,” abolish them from our streets, and let the chips fall where they may.
“Right now, Minneapolis and cities across our country are on fire, and our people are hurting — the violence against Black bodies felt in the ongoing mass disobedience, all while we grapple with a pandemic that is disproportionately affecting, infecting, and killing us,” BLM posted in a statement this week.
“We call for an end to the systemic racism that allows this culture of corruption to go unchecked and our lives to be taken,” the statement continued. “We call for a national defunding of police. We demand investment in our communities and the resources to ensure Black people not only survive, but thrive. If you’re with us, add your name to the petition right now and help us spread the word.”
On Thursday, President Trump took to Twitter with this message: “The Radical Left Democrats new theme is ‘Defund the Police.’ Remember that when you don’t want Crime, especially against you and your family. This is where Sleepy Joe is being dragged by the socialists. I am the complete opposite, more money for Law Enforcement! #LAWANDORDER.”
While Joe Biden has yet to go as far as to sign on to this campaign, it does enjoy support from Megan Rapinoe, Natalie Portman, Hillary Clinton’s former press secretary Brian Fallon, and many others who exist in the woke intersection of Hollywood and Washington. And whether or not Biden actually endorses such a radical step, it won’t be long before American voters come to understand that this election comes down to a simple choice: Support police…or abolish them.
And if the 2020 contest comes down to a choice like that, President Trump has already won the election.
