Just a few days ago, Rep. Ilhan Omar was asked a very simple question by a reformer in the Muslim community: Can you, as a Somalian immigrant and a prominent Muslim lawmaker, condemn the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation found throughout places with concentrated Islamic populations? Instead of answering the question, Omar went off on the question itself, claiming that it was somehow unfair that she would be asked such a thing when her colleagues were not. As though we really need to find out what Ted Cruz thinks about FGM.
But that was just the latest in a pattern of incidents in which Omar proves that she will not, cannot, and must not criticize Muslims. Even if those Muslims are active terrorists.
That was shown by a resurfaced interview from 2018, in which Omar was asked by Al Jazeera if the American people should have “legitimate fears” about jihadist terrorism. Instead of saying the obvious (duh!), Omar yet again found a way to shift the conversation.
“I would say our country should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country,” she replied. “And so if fear was the driving force of policies to keep America safe — Americans safe inside of this country — we should be profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men.”
Here, of course, Omar isn’t just trying to change the subject, she’s also lying through her teeth. According to the Justice Department, black offenders committed 4,379 homicides in 2013, accounting for 51.3% of total murder arrests. White offenders, on the other hand, committed 2,861 murders, accounting for 33.5% of arrests. We don’t need to get into the relative number of African-Americans to whites in our population to understand that Omar’s analysis is wholly ridiculous.
But when it comes to defending Islam, Omar is more than willing to tread into Camp Ridiculous.
In a speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations a few months ago, Omar said, “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”
She has also minimized terrorism emanating from the Palestinian territories and has even avoided condemning Al Qaeda, instead turning the question into criticism of U.S. troops.
We tend to believe that even skeptical Americans were willing to look at Omar’s hijab and the (D) beside her name and keep an open mind about what she was bringing to Capitol Hill.
Now only a fool could be blind to what that really is.
