Mere hours after President Obama sent Muslims a celebratory tweet in recognition of the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday, a 24-year-old man named Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez opened fire at a Naval Reserves center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The terrorist attack left 4 Marines dead and others injured; Abdulazeez himself was killed by officers.
At press time, little was known about the shooter or his motivations, but his name alone provides an unmistakable clue. ISIS has been encouraging its worldwide followers to join the caliphate. For those who don’t have the means to travel, the terrorist group has an alternative plan: kill people right where you live. ISIS particularly wants jihadists to target men and women in uniform, making it all the more likely that Abdulazzeez was a sympathizer.
The attack comes as liberals have been pushing the narrative that right-wing extremists pose the greatest domestic terrorism threat, hoping to draw attention and resources away from Islamic communities. Once again, though, when we move from theory to reality, it is a Muslim with his finger on the trigger. His actions do not condemn moderate Muslims any more than Dylan Roof’s condemned southern whites, but we saw how liberals reacted to that one. Will we see Democrats calling for the removal of Islamic symbols and statues? Will Amazon stop selling Islamic merchandise? Of course not; Islam stands for peace, dontcha know?
It remains to be seen whether Abdulazeez was a lone wolf or part of a larger terrorist cell. Whichever happens to be the case, this even should remind everyone that radical Islam remains the biggest threat to American national security. Talk all you want about sovereign citizens and secessionist groups; the blood spilled in Chattanooga outweighs all the left’s suspicious statistics.
People like Obama regularly caution us from painting all Muslims with the same broad brush. Terrorists like this shooter don’t represent the true Islam, they say. But when it comes to southerners who support the Confederate flag, they are all too happy to slam them all as racists. Muslims get the benefit of the doubt; southern whites are evil by default. The same goes for Christians, Republicans, and anyone else who has the audacity not to belong to one of their precious, protected minority groups.
Liberal hypocrisy in this area is more than annoying; it is lulling the country into a false sense of security. We are so busy hunting down ghosts that we are missing the real threat staring us in the face. We’re throwing money at climate change while radical Islamists plot to kill us. We’re tweeting messages to the Muslim community while its fundamentalist base is planning mass murder.
It’s time to wake up.
