Former Vice President Joe Biden is waging a presidential campaign that counts on the assumption that most Democrat-leaning voters are not as woke, socialist-leaning, or outright insane as the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezes of the world would make you think. In waging such a campaign, he’s threading the tiniest of needles, trying to appeal to moderates and “third way”-type Democrats at a time when radicals suck all of the oxygen out of the room. And this week, he lost one of his senior campaign staffers because his position on immigration wasn’t crazy enough to satisfy her.
A senior Joe Biden campaign staffer in charge of outreach to Latino, African-American and women’s groups has quit her post, telling two allies she was frustrated over her lack of input and with the presidential candidate’s immigration rhetoric.
Vanessa Cárdenas, the most senior Latina Biden staffer, had been serving as national coalitions director since the campaign formally announced its existence April 25. She resigned last week and has since changed her bio on Twitter to say she was “formerly with @joebiden.”
“The campaign is just hyper-focused on whites in Iowa and African-Americans and it placed less value on Latino outreach,” an immigration activist and friend who spoke with her told POLITICO.
“Vanessa kept banging her head against the wall trying to get them to take the community more seriously,” the friend, who wasn’t authorized to speak on her behalf, said. “And Biden just really won’t change when it comes to the way he talks about immigration. It became too much.”
Biden’s position on illegal immigration has been under scrutiny this week after he was confronted by activist Carlos Rojas of the group Movimiento Cosecha. Roja demanded that Biden pledge to stop all deportations if he wins the White House.
“No. I will not stop all deportations. I will prioritize deportations, only people who have committed a felony or serious crime,” Biden said.
Rojas said that even though he’d been an Obama supporter in 2008, he grew frustrated with the administration’s handling of illegal immigration. “Over those 8 years, there were 3 million people that were deported and separated from their families,” he said.
Which is when Biden, having heard enough, interrupted: “You should vote for Trump.”
We have to admit, we find this one of the best things that Biden has said all year, because it highlights just how ridiculous the left is with all of their infighting and purity tests and cannibalism. But, you know, if you’re running for president of a party that has gone insane, you can’t act like that. You have to bow and be subservient and spend every day apologizing for your white privilege. Unless Biden is willing to step it up in that regard, he may find it difficult to secure the nomination.
