BuzzFeed News has emerged victorious in a defamation lawsuit filed against them by an individual named in the Christopher Steele dossier, but their legal victory has been overshadowed by some late-breaking revelations in the case. On Wednesday, we finally learned how BuzzFeed got their hands on the dossier in the first place: Sen. John McCain’s longtime associate, David Kramer, handed it to them on December 29, 2016.
It has been known for a long time that McCain and Kramer came into possession of the dossier in late 2016, and it was already known that they gave a copy of the DNC/Clintons-paid-for propaganda to the FBI. But this is the first we’ve known that it was McCain and Kramer who gave the dossier to the media, which resulted in its publication shortly before Donald Trump took the Oath of Office.
First, a little trip down memory lane.
We first learned of the dossier when CNN published a story about James Comey privately briefing the incoming president on its contents. Less than a week later, BuzzFeed published the dossier in full on their website. Subsequently, journalists began admitting that this document had been floating around in the media ether for a few weeks (if not longer). Well, we now know from the court filings that Kramer was responsible for that as well. Apparently he and McCain were shopping this thing around town like it was a breakthrough novel by a struggling author. But everyone sat on the story until Comey briefed the president, turning the dossier from gossip into news overnight.
In the years since, we’ve learned that nearly everything in the dossier is a work of fiction, likely propagated by Russian intelligence. But in the meantime, it has been used as the basis for several FBI investigations, wiretaps on an American citizen, and endless reams of speculation from the Trump-hating media. To say it has been one of the most destructive pieces of political opposition research in history would be an understatement.
And what role did the late John McCain play in disseminating this vicious pack of lies? We can’t know for sure. The court filings confirm that he was responsible for sharing the dossier with Obama’s intel community, but they already had a copy and we already working with Christopher Steele.
It’s unclear from the lawsuit machinations whether or not McCain instructed Kramer to go to the media with the dossier. We won’t speculate…but we know that McCain was chomping at the bit to “get back” at Trump for those war hero comments made during the campaign.
Was this his way of doing it?
