Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) said that testimony from former State Department official Kurt Volker had done a great deal of damage to the Democrats’ hopes of impeaching President Trump. In the closed-door testimony before Congress, Zeldin said, Volker has provided many answers that unraveled the fictitious narrative that Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi are trying to spin to trap Trump in an impeachment spiral. And Zeldin predicted that Volker’s testimony would not be the last to do so.
“Honestly, I don’t believe that this impeachment inquiry, personally I don’t believe this impeachment inquiry should have been launched the way it was, when it was, it was launched before any member of Congress was able to read the whistleblower’s report,” Zeldin said. “It was released before any of us, any member of Congress, or the American public, was able to read for ourselves the transcripts.”
Volker worked at the State Department as special envoy to Ukraine until Rudy Giuliani revealed texts that he said proved that people at the State Department encouraged him to dig around in the Ukraine/2016/Biden situation. Democrats have seized upon some other texts from Volker that they say provides the “smoking gun” that proves Trump was trying to pressure Ukraine into investigating Biden.
“Had breakfast with Rudy [Giuliani] this morning — teeing up call with (Zelensky adviser) Yermak Monday. Must have helped. Most impt is for Zelensky to say that he will help investigation — and address any specific personnel issues — if there are any,” Volker wrote on July 19 to U.S. Ambassador Gordon Sondland.
And on the morning of Trump’s call with Zelensky, Volker wrote this to the aforementioned Yermak: “Heard from White House – assuming President Z convinces trump he will investigate/’get to the bottom of what happened’ in 2016, we will nail down date for visit to Washington.”
Now call us crazy, but we don’t see the name “Biden” mentioned here at all. But apparently for any government official to even mention “investigations” is a crime of enormous import when the official in question is a member of the Trump administration. We certainly don’t remember any lefties calling for Obama’s impeachment when he leaned on Britain and Australia to help the 2016 investigation.
Anyway, Zeldin said that Volker’s testimony was a gamechanger.
“Now what we’re going to see with one person after another coming before these committees of jurisdiction are blowing massive holes inside of the theory, the narrative that chairman Schiff has been providing to the public,” Zeldin said. “For example, when he says that President Trump was asking President Zelensky to manufacture dirt on the Bidens, today blows a hole in that argument. When you are making the claim that the president was asking for a quid pro quo with President Zelensky, today is blowing a massive hole in the middle of that allegation.”
Many holes have already been blown in the Democrats’ allegations, and they were pretty anemic allegations in the first place. We don’t doubt that, by the end of all this, the Ukraine Scandal is going to make the Russia Scandal look halfway plausible and logical. The Democrats are beyond desperate, and it’s showing.
