There’s a fascinating article up at CNN. It’s not interesting, exactly, because of what it tells us in words; it’s interesting that it exists at all.
The story is about Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Apparently, several employees of the agency have come forward to CNN to report that Zinke (GASP) doesn’t really think that diversity should be the number one goal when hiring and firing staff.
Let’s take a look:
Three high-ranking Interior officials from three different divisions said that Zinke has made several comments with a similar theme, saying “diversity isn’t important,” or “I don’t care about diversity,” or “I don’t really think that’s important anymore.”
Each time, Zinke followed with something along the lines of, “what’s important is having the right person for the right job,” or “I care about excellence, and I’m going to get the best people, and you’ll find we have the most diverse group anyone’s ever had,” the sources said.
Interior last year unexpectedly reassigned 33 senior executive staffers, of which 15 were minorities, according to the lawyer of one of the staffers who was moved. Some of those who were reassigned have filed complaints with the US Merit Systems Board.
So, a spokesperson for Zinke has denied that he ever made any comments along those lines, which is apparently what you have to do when you’re accused of such a horrible, terrible thoughtcrime as this. But honestly, we would love it if Zinke just came out and said it in front of a microphone: “I would rather focus on hiring the best people instead of filling some racial/gender quota. Sue me.”
Of course, they probably would.
This story is interesting because at no point in the story does anyone come out and say, Okayyyy…what’s the problem? It’s just ASSUMED that diversity should be the highest goal of any department or business. You…you don’t CARE about diversity? You…you’re just going to hire people based on their…their…MERIT? OMG, what are you, Hitler?
“If you look at the actions he’s taken, they are unbalanced in regards to minorities and women,” said one so-called whistleblower. “If you look at the people who were moved and you look at their race or gender, it’s very obvious that this is a person that does not embrace the concept of diversity.”
Again, CNN doesn’t bother to offer the simple viewpoint of – perhaps those people had jobs only because they were minorities and NOT because they were in any way qualified for the position?
If this is really Zinke’s philosophy (and we suspect that it is), then we wholeheartedly support it. Diversity is fine and well, but it should ALWAYS be subordinate to putting the right people in the right jobs.
Yeah, we’re Nazis, we know…
