It will probably not surprise you to realize that the mainstream media – specifically, the three major networks’ evening news broadcasts – devoted slavish attention to the liberal Women’s Marches and nearly none at all to the annual March for Life, an anti-abortion event that takes place every year in Washington, D.C.
According to an analysis by NewsBusters, the difference in coverage was startling: “During their Saturday news shows the first evening of the Women’s March, ABC, CBS, and NBC spent a total of 6 minutes, 43 seconds highlighting the event. In comparison, following Friday’s March for Life, the three broadcast networks spent just 2 minutes, 6 seconds on the pro-life rally.”
Though the second annual Women’s Marches did not draw nearly as many people to the streets in Washington and New York as they did the day after President Trump’s inauguration, they received plenty of attention from the adoring media. The marches, organized and led by far-left individuals like Muslim extremist Linda Sarsour, claim the represent the interests of all women – but that is a specious claim if ever there was one. Indeed, there is no place in these marches for conservative women or anyone who believes that abortion should not be a retail right, publicized and available on every metropolitan street corner.
As NewsBusters points out, giving short shrift to pro-lifers is nothing new for the big three networks:
During their morning and evening news shows for the past five years (2013 – 2017, the broadcast networks have offered fewer than 24 minutes to the March for Life. To put that in perspective, ABC, CBS and NBC spent more than three times that on the Women’s March in 2017 alone, with 1 hour, 15 minutes, 18 seconds.
With their evening shows immediately following the 2018 March for Life on Friday, the networks combined spent a mere 2 minutes, 6 seconds on the pro-life rally. The networks that follow President Trump’s every move couldn’t devote more time to the event making history: for the first time ever, the president addressed the March for Life live via satellite.
Despite the fact that the president addressed the marchers and that 100,000 people showed up in Washington for the event, the media can barely be bothered to give pro-lifers any airtime. This continues their narrative myth, which is that only a small band of religious fanatics across America continue to hold anti-abortion views. The Democrats must be held up as the infinite warriors for women’s liberation, and that fantasy must be upheld by marginalizing those with pro-life views. The only problem? Pro-lifers make up roughly half the country’s population.
You sure wouldn’t know it by watching the news.
