In no uncertain language, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said Thursday that if Joe Biden were to push the country into a mandatory six-week lockdown once inaugurated, his state would not be going along with the program. Asked about Biden’s rumored intentions at a press conference, Reeves, a Republican, said that such an order would be needlessly disastrous for the economy.
“We’re not going to participate in a nation-wide lockdown,” Reeves said. “It’s totally and completely beyond reasonableness. That’s not the way the economy works.”
Reeves questioned whether Biden would have the authority to make such a mandate in the first place.
“We will certainly fight that if necessary,” Reeves said.
The question came as a result of an interview Dr. Michael Osterholm gave to MSNBC on Wednesday. Osterholm has been named to Biden’s coronavirus task force, and he told the hosts of “Morning Joe” that a national lockdown would help to stop the spread of the pandemic.
“In the first week of August, Neel Kashkari, the president of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank, and I wrote an op-ed piece in The New York Times that basically said we need to, in a sense, lock down to drive this infection level to a place where we can actually control it with testing and tracing and follow-up that way, just like the Asian countries have done. And I’m talking about everything from Australia to New Zealand, all the way right up through China, Japan. All of those countries have done it already,” he said.
“Really, to deal with the pain and suffering economically is what we basically proposed was because the savings rate in this country has gone out of the roof, since the pandemic,” he continued. “We have gone from 8% to over 22%. We can borrow the money from ourselves at historically low interest rates. We can pay people to lose their job. We can pay small business. We can take care of city, state and county governments if we’re elected to do that. If Washington could get together and make that happen. That would be a very different kind of lockdown where people wouldn’t suffer, and we can get this virus under control.”
You know, it’s funny: We don’t remember Biden’s plan of putting the nation under lockdown for six weeks being in any of his campaign commercials. We don’t remember him being questioned about it at any press conference. We certainly don’t remember Chris Wallace or Kristen Welker bringing it up at either of the debates. Apparently, it was more important to get President Trump to disavow white supremacy for the umpteenth time.
This lockdown, assuming Biden could even come close to enforcing it, would be the death knell of our economy. Wonder how many people are beginning to wish they could change their vote…
