In interviews and Twitter remarks on Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) excoriated Democrats for once again blocking a bill that would provide additional COVID-19 stimulus funds for Americans. In his remarks, McConnell said that Democrats refuse to help Americans until after the election. As long as Trump is in the White House, however, they are going to do everything they can to make sure the economy does not fully recover.
“Every Senate Democrat just voted against hundreds of billions of dollars of COVID-19 relief,” McConnell wrote on Twitter. “They blocked money for schools, testing, vaccines, unemployment insurance, and the Paycheck Protection Program. Their goal is clear: No help for American families before the election.”
In an interview later with Fox News host Dana Perino, McConnell doubled down on that message, accusing Democrats of refusing to pass anything through Congress unless they get trillions of dollars for left-wing agenda items that have absolutely nothing to do with the coronavirus.
“What part of this bill are they opposed to?” McConnell asked. “What we tried to do, Dana, was to craft a package that underscored the things that we supposedly agree on — kids in school, replenishing the popular small business loan program, which is out of money, more money for hospitals and covering unemployment insurance for another six months. What’s to not like about that?
“What they’re saying is, we won’t pass things that we are even in favor of, unless you give us trillions more,” he continued. “The national debt is already the size of our economy for the first time since World War II. We’re not going to squander funds here. We want to narrowly target the needs of the American people. That’s what this vote is about.”
McConnell and Trump really need to latch onto this message and hit it hard from now until the election, because that’s the complete opposite of what they’re saying in the mainstream media. There, as usual, it’s the Republican Party that is obstructing COVID funds. There, as usual, it’s McConnell who is the heartless elitist who won’t deign to help working families. There, as usual, everything is Trump’s fault, and if you believe otherwise, you must be living in a dreamworld.
The facts are on the side of the Republicans in this legislative battle, but if they rely on the media to give those facts to the American people, then it won’t matter.
