President Trump’s many enemies in Washington, Hollywood, and the media have taken great delight in catastrophizing his response to the mayhem in Portland. Willfully ignorant to the violence visited upon local police, federal agents, and everyday citizens of Portland by this ignorant, anarchist mob, they are only too glad to tell Americans their version of the truth: Peaceful, freedom-loving protesters are being savagely attacked by anonymous paramilitary forces at the behest of the dictator-like President of the United States!
Alas, perhaps knowing to some extent that the vast majority of Americans are never going to choose Antifa over the police, some pundits have decided that merely lying about the facts in Portland isn’t enough. So they’ve upped the ante by dreaming up crazy conspiracy theories about what’s really going on.
MSNBC’s John Heilemann is one such pundit. On “Morning Joe” this week, Heilemann suggested that the federal response in Portland is merely Trump’s practice round before the real thing: The civil crackdown he’ll impose in November when it comes time to “steal the election” from Joe Biden.
“I don’t want to be overly alarmist about this, but this is the time to be alarmist knowing where Donald Trump stands politically, understanding where we are headed in this election,” said the alarmist Heilemann. “I think we are looking at potentially a trial run for – a genuine attempt to, through intimidation, and potentially through force, to try to steal this election.
“I think we are now at the point where we see the things that the president is doing, we see his intention to not accept an outcome of this election where he loses to Joe Biden,” he added.
Sorry, we must have missed the logical step that goes between “quelling violent protests” and “stealing the election.” Maybe we’re just too dense to follow Heilemann’s argument, but…can someone help us out here? Oh, this is just more of the same Trump = Hitler rhetoric we’ve been hearing since mid-2015 from these hysterical goons? Okay then, carry on.
Bizarrely enough, Heilemann isn’t the only liberal trying to make this connection. Esquire’s Charles Pierce wrote a whole essay about it last week, arguing that Portland could be a “rehearsal” for something far darker in November. Pierce’s theory drew attention from actor Alec Baldwin, who tweeted a link to the piece with the statement: “This is Trump’s election strategy.”
Nah, we’d say the strategy is to just sit back and let the left hang itself with its own rope. And man, is it ever working.
