Under pressure from an incoming class of progressive Democrats who want to focus on issues like universal healthcare and a “green” economy, House Minority Leader (and likely next House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi announced Friday that she would be creating a new congressional committee aimed at battling climate change. She appointed Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL) to chair the new committee, which she said would tackle what has become an “existential threat” that portends doom for the entire world.
She somehow restrained herself from adding the phrase: “Just like Trump!”
“The American people have demanded action to combat the climate crisis, which threatens our public health, our economy, our national security and the whole of God’s creation,” said Pelosi in a statement. “Together, we must protect public health by reducing air pollution, create jobs by making America preeminent in green technologies, defend our national security by preventing climate-driven instability and uphold our sacred moral responsibility to leave a healthy, sustainable future for generations to come.”
Whenever you’re inspired to such heights of hyperbole that you find yourself using a phrase like “the whole of God’s creation,” it’s probably worth sending the statement back through for a final edit. But then, Pelosi is given to such exaggerations, and she loves presenting herself as some kind of left-wing, Christian savior. We’ve lost count of the number of times she’s spoken about the “divine spark” inside each and every illegal immigrant. As if you cannot honor that spark and enforce the law simultaneously.
Oh, also: When exactly have the American people “demanded action” on the climate crisis? We haven’t seen polls reflecting that view. Hell, the Democrats ran in the midterms on two prongs: Anti-Trump nonsense and healthcare. We didn’t hear a whole lot of them out on the campaign trail talking about climate change, and there’s a very good reason for that – namely, voters don’t give a damn. That’s the truth, and it is borne out in poll after poll.
But then, neither do Democrats in Washington. It’s merely a tool they can use to demonize Republicans as “science-deniers” and put more big government handcuffs on the free market. When it is no longer useful in that capacity, they’ll cast it aside in favor of something that is.
In the meantime, we apparently have to put up with this Pelosi-style showboating for the next couple of years. Talk about contributing hot air to the environment.
