Students at Tarrant County College in Hurst, Texas were so disturbed by a professor’s lecture this week that they left the room and called the cops. While it’s not unusual on today’s college campuses for students to be subjected to pro-Islam lectures that ignore some of the obvious truths about one of the world’s most widespread religions, we’d venture to say that few of those lectures cross over into the blatantly weird territory that Professor Daniel Mashburn’s traveled.
According to students who spoke to Fox 4 News, Mashburn, an adjunct, walked into his Astronomy class on Tuesday, most of the class noticed that they were about to witness something very strange. He arrived wearing a baseball cap, a toboggan, and a scarf that covered his face. He did not remove any of this as he began to lecture the students about “the Koran and the moon and the dark night.”
“Mostly he was talking about different things of the Muslim faith,” student April McLeod said. “I was in class for about five minutes. He kept messing with his pocket and you could tell there was an object in the right-hand pocket. And whenever he went to pull out his hand, I started having this really bad feeling and jumped up and ran out of the classroom.”
Campus police interviewed Mashburn but did not see cause to arrest him. The professor then agreed to speak with a reporter from Fox 4, though the interview did not exactly shed light on anything other than, perhaps, Mashburn’s mental instability. He explained that he would not show his face in class, just as “they do not show their faces” in many other countries.
When the reporter advised Mashburn that he was living in America with a different standard, Mashburn said, “Oh, yes. But I do not answer to your standard. I am not a Christian. I am not a Jew. I’m a Muslim.”
“When you interviewed with Tarrant County College to get this job, did you explain to them your teaching philosophy?” the reporter asked.
“I keep it secret,” Mashburn said. “I keep it safe. I do my best, but I am tired of hiding in the shadows. I am tired of fearing their law. I fear Allah.”
The reporter asked him if he regretted scaring the students to the point they felt compelled to call 911.
“I do not know why they fear me,” he said. “Why are they afraid? I’m a man who covers his face in his hand. I offer you nothing but the Koran a book and the universe. The universe is in my hand right here. You can look at it.”
So yeah. The college has suspended him indefinitely.
And if there are any FBI field offices in the area, they would be wise to keep an eye on good old Mr. Mashburn here.
