It would have been hard to imagine last week at this time that CNN could manage to have a worse week than they were already having. After an explosive scandal involving a fake news story and three fired reporters, the network closed out the week with some damning undercover videos showing their producers and stars disparaging voters and waving off the Russian collusion story as so much hysterical garbage. The network had nearly no room for a further descent this week, but somehow they found a way to outdo themselves.
President Trump, perhaps, deserves a little credit for the assist. He trolled the network on Sunday with a video showing him “beating up” CNN. It was a doctored version of footage from a WrestleMania event, where Trump battled it out with WWE CEO Vince McMahon in a staged fight. In other words, it was fun, lighthearted, and impossible to take seriously by anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together.
Naturally, it made the liberals at CNN irate. After releasing an absurd statement alleging that Trump was “encouraging violence against reporters,” the network put its investigators out in cyberspace to find out who had created the video that Trump tweeted. They found their man in a Reddit user calling himself “HanAssholeSolo.” And then, apparently, they set about threatening the user with public exposure if he did not repent and apologize for his social media trolling.
After an initial report on Monday that exposed the user’s Reddit history – a history that included some racist and anti-semitic posts – CNN found the man behind the username. Subsequently, the Redditor posted a full apology for his posts and told the social media site that he had made them out of a desire to get a rise out of people.
“As time went on it became an addiction as to how far it could go with the posts that were made,” he wrote Tuesday. “This has been an extreme wake up call to always consider how others may think or feel about what is being said before clicking the submit button anywhere online that an opinion is allowed. Free speech is a right we all have, but it shouldn’t be used in the manner that it was in the posts that were put on this site. Just because you are behind a keyboard doesn’t mean you can’t hurt someone with your words or cause a situation such as this one where a simple meme is misconstrued as calling for violence.”
Fair enough, but CNN’s statement after the posting now has critics wondering if the network pressured the Redditor to repent…or else.
“CNN is not publishing ‘HanA**holeSolo’s’ name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again,” they reported. “In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same. CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.”
WHAT? We thought CNN was a news organization. Apparently, they are also moral crusaders, threatening to “doxx” online trolls if they do not bow to their demands? This is absolutely outrageous and is, in its way, even worse than what they’ve been doing to the president. By any reasonable standards of ethical journalism, they should have recused themselves from this “story” right off the bat, because they don’t have any business reporting on their own feud with President Trump. And that conflict of interest has become readily apparent, since they are apparently blackmailing people into taking “their side” instead of simply covering the facts. And they don’t even have the decency to disguise it!
Trump can put his wrestling moves away; at this rate, CNN is more than capable of clotheslining THEMSELVES out of existence.
