The mainstream media has a hero, a villain, and a court jester, just in time for the Halloween season. Yes, it’s time once again to play, “Destroy the President of the United States” with your friends at CNN, MSNBC, the Washington Post, and the New York Times, to name just a few offenders. They are aided in this endeavor by a woman who dresses like she heads out trick-or-treating all year ‘round, Rep. Frederica Wilson, a Democrat from Florida. Wilson remarkably claims that she was standing nearby listening on a speakerphone when President Trump called the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson to express his gratitude and condolences. And what he said made the cowgirl from Florida very, very angry.
“He knew what he signed up for,” Trump told the widow, according to this clown.
That was all the media needed to dredge up a storyline of Trump vs. Vets and Their Families. Of course, everyone remembers how he bashed John McCain during the campaign and how he attacked the Khan family after the Democratic National Convention, but now’s as good a time as ever to play the clips one more time. That helps us develop our narrative that Trump has something against those who serve our country and allows us to suspend our disbelief when listening to this fool in a red cowboy hat.
Trump denies having said the offensive phrase in the call, but who knows? Maybe he said it and maybe he didn’t. So what if he did, though? Out of context (or in a ridiculous context, such as Trump’s imaginary war on Gold Star families), it can be made to sound insensitive, but you can easily read it in a more charitable way. It doesn’t diminish the widow’s loss or Johnson’s sacrifice. If anything, it highlights the man’s heroism. How many Americans can honestly say they would go into a situation where they know there’s a chance they could be killed? If you want to give Trump the benefit of the doubt – and the media surely doesn’t – this could be viewed as the ultimate compliment.
Even if you think the president made this comment flippantly, his enemies are far more disgusting for their willingness to politicize Sgt. Johnson’s death for their own storyline. Is THAT what his widow wants? Is THAT really what best honors his legacy? To turn him into another news clip next to “I like people who weren’t captured?”
Part of this is about ratings; the media knows that their watchers and readers love to hear about Trump’s latest “scandal.” But part of it is a sincere desire on the part of these liberal networks and newspapers to use anything and everything they can to diminish this president. We won’t say that this is the lowest they’ve sunk (that bar has dropped dramatically), but it’s pretty bad.
