More than 1,000 members of a group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans gathered in Richmond, Virginia this week to denounce the movement against the rebel flag and other Confederate monuments. The group’s commander-in-chief, Charles Kelly Barrow, said Wednesday that this was a movement aimed not at racism but at southern heritage.
“I’ll use the words of Jefferson Davis: ‘We just want to be left alone,'” said Barrow. “They want to remove our flags, the names on our streets, our monuments. We’re in a country that’s supposed to be tolerant, and suddenly they’re targeting our culture. I can’t wait to wake up from this nightmare.”
Unfortunately for Barrow and other proud southerners, this nightmare is only just beginning. When liberals saw Charleston church murderer Dylann Roof posing with the Confederate flag, they saw an opportunity to drive a stake into the heart of the South. Rather than address the specific sentiments that led Roof to kill nine black people last month, they drew the nation’s attention to the Confederate flag flying on the South Carolina Statehouse grounds. Republicans like Nikki Haley and Jeb Bush found it all too easy to go right along with the flow, leaving southern conservatives without a mainstream voice.
Liberals are going to do their thing. The question is why so many Americans are ignorant enough to fall for their tricks. Why do so many people hear a news story on NBC and buy the liberal narrative without bothering to think critically? Why was it so easy for people to believe that Michael Brown was murdered and so hard for people to believe that Darren Wilson was justified?
The problem is the media itself. Americans are awash in it, and the vast majority of what comes into our homes is filtered through a liberal lens. That’s not just “news”: it’s our music, our movies, our TV shows, our magazines, our websites, and so on. If you spend your days and nights inside the echo chamber, there’s a good chance you’re going to start seeing the world through that very particular lens. Unless you have the initiative to seek out other viewpoints and give them a fair chance, you’ll inevitably be led down the primrose path.
Does anyone really believe that supporters of the Confederate flag want to reinstate slavery? The very notion is ridiculous. This flag has come to represent so much more than the Confederacy itself. Over the last hundred years, its colors have come to be synonymous with the southern way of life. Men and women across the South see that flag and they see their childhoods. Their neighbors. Their friends. Their families. They see the principles of God, country, and pride.
Liberals know all of this, and that’s exactly why they’re so eager to get rid of it. The faster they can demonize the southern way of life, the faster they can replace it with their elitist Yankee ideals.
