According to a thorough study of every minute the major broadcast networks spent covering the Ukraine scandal from Sept. 20 to Sept. 30, the news programs on ABC, CBS, and NBC devoted no less than 7 hours of coverage to the fallout from President Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This isn’t a surprising amount of coverage, given the talk of Washington these days, but we were – well, not surprised, but at least dismayed – to see how anemic their coverage was of the other half of this scandal: Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, and his work with a Ukrainian energy company.
According to the study, carried out by the folks over at the Media Research Center, the networks only spent 46 six minutes (in SEVEN hours) even mentioning Biden’s role in the controversy. Sure, sure, they told viewers that this was the subject of Trump’s call, but even when they did that much, they made certain to cover it up with phrases like, “There’s no evidence of any wrongdoing.” Would only that the president could get that kind of disclaimer!
MRC and NewsBusters collected some of the most egregious instances of network news reporters exonerating Biden and his son with no particular journalistic curiosity whatsoever.
“Hunter Biden did make tens of thousands of dollars a month working for a Ukrainian company while his father was vice president,” acknowledged ABC’s Jon Karl. “But there’s been no evidence of any wrongdoing.”
Over on CBS, Ben Tracy said, “The President’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani claims – without proof – that Joe Biden tried to bribe the Ukranian government to get his son out of legal trouble.”
And on NBC, Hallie Jackson was the one carrying water for the Democrats. “The President’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani has suggested then-Vice President Biden tried to stop an investigation into a Ukrainian company that named his son to its board, despite no evidence of wrongdoing by Joe Biden.”
Once upon a time, we might have expected that our nation’s journalists would actually get off their duff and do some investigating to SEE whether there was any “evidence of wrongdoing,” but they don’t seem to have much interest in exposing Joe Biden, strangely enough. If they did have any such interest, they could simply look at the circumstances under which Hunter Biden was hired by Burisma, compare his salary with his nonexistent background in energy, and come to some basic conclusions. Then they could do a little digging into Joe Biden pressuring the Ukrainians to fire a prosecutor who was investigating Burisma for fraud.
But no, no, we’re sure there’s nothing there for us to be concerned about. Hey, let’s talk about that phone call some more!
