Perhaps there will come a day when liberals can finally move past the 2016 election and deal with the reality of a Donald Trump presidency, but until that day, they are still searching far and wide for something – ANYTHING – that can explain why Hillary Clinton lost on November 8. So far, the blame list includes: Russia, bigotry, James Comey, Bernie Sanders, Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, conservative media, liberal media, and Barack Obama.
Add to that list: The National Enquirer.
According to Jack Shafer of Politico, Hillary Clinton couldn’t possibly fight past the volume of pro-Trump, anti-Hillary stories found in supermarket tabloids. And he doesn’t think it matters much that no one is actually reading these papers.
About dwindling tabloid readership rates, Shafer said, “But that misses the importance of the constant cultural background noise it adds to American life. There are 37,000 supermarkets in America, with an average of about 10 checkout stands each, and many stands feature a wire rack displaying the Enquirer, the Globe, often the company’s other tab, the National Examiner, and celebrity magazines.
“According to an industry study, American households make an average of 1.5 trips to the supermarket each week,” Shafer continued. “Every customer passes by the checkout stand, which means that even people who never purchase a tabloid still absorb the ambient headlines, and those headlines can shape their view of the world.”
And so what, exactly, has eight long years of media adoration for Barack Obama done to shape Americans’ view of the world? Oh, but that probably didn’t have the enormous psychological impact of a few National Enquirer headlines. That’s why we constantly see America falling into heated national debates about which celebrities have the best beach body and which ones have gained 300 pounds in under a month. Give us a break.
Once you dig beneath the surface, you can see that this is just another aspect of the media’s “fake news” narrative, which is quickly turning against them. They want to put the blame anywhere and everywhere other than Hillary Clinton and themselves. They will not ever admit that they might have thrown the election with their own unhinged war on Trump.
By the time we get done with Trump’s presidency, the National Enquirer may be more reliable than the liberal news organizations that we’ve all come to know and loathe.
Judging by some of what we’ve seen over the past week, this may already be the case.
