Using his post-fight victory speech as a platform on Saturday night, UFC fighter Colby Covington said that his quick and merciless defeat of opponent Tyron Woodley was just a preview of the shellacking that President Donald Trump would give Joe Biden on Election Day.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the silent majority is ready to make some noise,” Covington said. “If you thought that was a beating, wait till November 3 when Donald Trump gets his hands on Sleepy Joe. That’s gonna be a landslide.”
Covington then took a shot at athletes who use their position to make noise for left-wing social justice causes.
“I want to dedicate this fight to all the first responders, all the military out there,” he said. “This world would not be safe without you guys. You keep us safe and not these woke athletes. I’m sick of these woke athletes and spineless cowards like LeBron James.”
ESPN characterized the fight between Covington and Woodley as a long-brewing contest: “Saturday’s main event was billed as one of the biggest grudge matches in the history of the UFC welterweight division. Covington and Woodley have a long history, including both once representing American Top Team. Woodley flew the younger Covington into his hometown of St. Louis as a training partner in 2014, and the two had a falling-out.”
ESPN also reported that President Trump himself called up Covington after the fight to praise him.
“You are a great fighter, man, I’ll tell you. You make it so easy, I don’t know how you do that. Congratulations. I wanted to watch that fight tonight. I wanted to watch it, you were great,” Trump told the sportsman. “That was easy work, relatively easy work for you. I’m proud of you, man. I’m proud of you.”
Covington took to Twitter later to add: “Nothing makes me prouder than fighting for the people who fight for America!!! THANK YOU to all the brave men and women of law enforcement and the military!!! Thank You @realDonaldTrump for all the love and support!! The silent majority is ready to make some noise November 3rd!!”
Let’s hope it’s a knockout.
