In a shocking statement that should chill the blood of any Westerner, Natalie Bennett, the leader of the UK’s Green Party, said that she believed it was “not a crime simply to belong to an organisation,” when asked her thoughts on Brits joining terrorist groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda.
“What we want to do is make sure we are not punishing people for what they think or what they believe,” said Bennett on the BBC’s Sunday Politics show. While she was quick to establish that anyone who engaged in violence should be prosecuted, she insisted that merely joining these groups were not cause for taking legal action.
Aiding the Cause
Her comments come as the UK, other European countries, and the United States are scrambling to stop their citizens from heading to the Middle East to join the terrorists. Already, there has been controversy in the U.S. over whether or not Americans should be stripped of their citizenship if they join ISIS. What might seem like a no-brainer to you or me is a hand-wringing matter for the liberal left. The gadflies and politicians who never care about something as petty as the First Amendment when forcing business owners to betray their religious beliefs are suddenly champions of free expression when it comes to would-be terrorists.
Not That Bad, Really…
Of course, assuming that the extreme left would vilify those Westerners who join ISIS and Al Qaeda would be to assume they would vilify those groups at all. While mainstream liberals are hung up on delineating the difference between peaceful Islam and radical Islam, there are plenty who don’t really see the problem with these groups.
An Alabama Democrat, Jesse T. Smith, said last year that “Actions of Republicans in Congress are worse than #ISIL.” And while his tweet may have made headlines, it isn’t far from what other mainstream libs believe. Other left-wing websites have made similar claims about right-wing extremist groups being a far greater threat than Islamic terrorism, sidestepping the pesky issue of facts in favor of random predictions.
Bennett’s comments come as a new ISIS video has the group’s members threatening to make America their eventual destination. Addressing President Obama directly, the featured fighter warned, “Know, oh Obama, that we will reach America. Know also that we will cut off your head in the White House and transform America into a Muslim province.” The terrorist then beheaded a Kurdish soldier.
