Predictably, the adoring media has been all-too-willing to generate clickbait with breathless excerpts from the new tell-all, insider book “A Warning,” which is written by an anonymous “senior Trump administration official.”
The same official caused heads to explode last year when he wrote an op-ed for The New York Times, assuring America that there was a “resistance” in the White House working to thwart all the terrible plans Trump apparently has for the country. That op-ed was met with a certain amount of disdain from both sides of the aisle – the author was, after all, a Republican – and the new book is attracting more of the same. Of course, that won’t stop the Times and the Post and all the rest of the liberal media from using those juicy, juicy quotes.
In a statement to the Daily Caller this week, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham blasted the book and its anonymous author.
“The coward who wrote this book didn’t put their name on it because it is nothing but lies,” Grisham said. “Real authors reach out to their subjects to get things fact checked — but this person is in hiding, making that very basic part of being a real writer impossible. Reporters who choose to write about this farce should have the journalistic integrity to cover the book as what it is — a work of fiction.”
They are doing nothing of the kind. While reviews of the book have been mixed – there are apparently a few too many “been there, done that” anecdotes in the text – we haven’t seen anyone in the press question the author’s honesty.
At the Times, Maggie Haberman seemed to delight in Trump’s (unknown) reaction to the book.
“Anonymous’s conclusion that the president is running perhaps the most inept and dysfunctional White House in history will vex and bother Mr. Trump. But what might bother him the most is the description of his lack of fitness for the role and his lack of interest in adapting to the job, or learning about the government he oversees,” she writes.
Maybe what bothers him the most is the fact that, unlike any other White House in history, this one has to deal with a secret cabal of self-important jackasses like Anonymous who think they are more fit to run the country than the guy America elected. Or maybe that’s just what bothers us.
