(TotalConservative.com) – In response to the overturning of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision last year which kicked the decision of how abortion should be regulated back to individual states, Democratic governors from 20 states are now forming a network to push for access to abortion and coordinate their efforts on legislation.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is leading the charge behind the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, which he describes as a way for individual states and governors to communicate the best approaches and methods to secure abortion rights for Americans under their governorship, as well as those U.S. citizens from more restrictive states seeking an abortion.
The alliance would share models for how to word legislation and executive orders to protect abortion access, protect providers from being persecuted, secure federal funding for birth control, secure access to abortion pills as well as contraceptives, and anything else related to reproductive health care.
These efforts also come in the wake of a recent challenge to the abortion pill raised in a Texas federal court, which could impact access to the FDA-approved medication nationwide. Medication abortion accounts for the majority of abortions in the U.S.
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the point of the alliance is to leverage the strength of Democratic governors and “to have more of a national voice.” Newsom called it a “moral obligation” in order to protect what he describes as a fundamental right.
Although the alliance can’t determine national policy or impose it across state lines, Lujan Grisham said the value lies in legislators being able to communicate with one another to form a unified framework.
The group, which is billed as nonpartisan, is willing to welcome Republicans, yet so far it seems to only be composed of Democrats, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, as well as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
