What happened at a Colorado STEM school on Tuesday when one student was killed and seven others were injured by a shooting? The facts of the shooting were still unclear as of Wednesday afternoon, but that didn’t stop a great many of the 2020 Democratic presidential contenders from seizing on the news to push their respective gun control agendas.

“How many more of our children’s schools must be torn apart by gun violence until Congress does something?” tweeted Sen. Elizabeth Warren. “We need gun reform. Now.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar jumped in with her own two cents. “My heart goes out to the victims & their families at the STEM School Highlands Ranch, just eight miles away from Columbine High School. This has to stop. We must pass federal laws to end gun violence.”

Then it was Sen. Cory Booker’s turn. After making a ridiculous comparison, saying that there is “more federal regulation over toy guns than real ones,” he insinuated that Congress was in some way responsible for the shooting.

“Another day, another school shooting,” said Booker. “Every hour we wait more people are murdered – we have to pass comprehensive gun safety reform.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell went straight for the fundraising email, writing to supporters: “Today, our hearts go to Douglas County, CO and the victims of the shooting today. As I talk about the big and bold ideas on other issues, I promise that ending gun violence comes first.”

There are two things about Tuesday’s shooting we do know, both of them somewhat unusual. One, that one of the perpetrators was apparently a female. Two, more to the point, police have said that a handgun was used in the commission of the crime. Those facts could change as time goes on, but that’s what we have right now. Why does it matter? Because most of what Democrats want out of their so-called “comprehensive gun reform” is to ban AR15-style semiautomatic rifles. These guns – “weapons of war,” they call them – are often at the center of these shootings. We would have to assume that if one were used Tuesday, we’d already know about it.

In any event, it’s just another sign that no matter what kind of unconstitutional gun control laws the Democrats pass, it’s not going to do a damn thing to stop this from happening. If Washington really wants to get to the bottom of this scourge, they would do well to figure out why these shootings are happening and forget about the tools used to carry them out.

We have a feeling, though, that asking tough questions about the moral and spiritual state of our country would force Democrats to confront some ugly truths. Much easier to just yell about guns.
