When David Daleiden of the Center for Medical Progress released footage showing that Planned Parenthood was engaged in illegal activity, he expected it would move Americans to revise their opinions of the nation’s largest abortion provider. He expected that government officials would investigate the organization and perhaps strip it of federal funding.

He did not expect to find himself under indictment.

But that’s exactly what happened when the case went before a Texas grand jury. The jury cleared Planned Parenthood of all wrongdoing and brought indictments against Daleiden and Sandra Merritt, one of his undercover investigators. The two were charged with using fake credentials to gain access to a Houston clinic.

This week, according to Daleiden, California DOJ agents raided his home in Orange County. On Facebook, the activist claimed that the agents “seized all video footage showing Planned Parenthood’s criminal trade in aborted baby parts, in addition to my personal information.” He said the raid was nothing less than an “attack on citizen journalism” and a violation of his First Amendment rights.

Complicating the issue is attorney general Kamala Harris, a Democrat who is in the middle of a bid for the Senate. As Daleiden pointed out in his post, Harris has accepted campaign donations from Planned Parenthood. She also just happens to be the person in charge of the investigation against the Center for Medical Progress. You don’t have to be a genius to see the conflict of interest.

But that’s nothing new. This became political the moment the videos were released. Instead of soberly investigating the veracity of Daleiden’s claims, Democrats circled their wagons and vehemently defended America’s national abortion mill. Many of them, including Nancy Pelosi, denounced the videos without ever watching them. The media, showing their customary bias, refused to treat the videos as anything other than a conservative attack on women. They were more interested in parsing Carly Fiorina’s comments on the videos than the videos themselves. Big surprise.

If Daleiden really thought this was going to go another way, he is as naive as he is ambitious. Democrats have too much stake in this game. They have made the Republican “war on women” a central part of their platform. They have perfected the art of defending the indefensible. In fact, they’ve gotten so good at it that if you didn’t know better, you would think they hold the moral high ground on abortion.

Confronted with videos that could put lie to that notion, the left had no choice but to destroy this story before it could spiral out of control.
