Apparently black lives matter only if they aren’t wearing a police uniform. That’s the message protesters sent as they gathered in Times Square on Thursday, just two days after NYPD officer Randolph Holder was killed in East Harlem. Holder, a black man from Guyana, was killed by a criminal with a long history of violent convictions, but that event was not important to the protesters who hit the streets.

“When police engage in arbitrary police power and when they actually kill fellow citizens, they must go to jail,” said protest organizer Cornel West.

Indeed. But then…no one disputes that. The dispute, insofar as there is one, is over this definition of “arbitrary.” And since the Black Lives Matter movement began after the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, it’s been obvious that this is a movement with too much passion and not enough facts. Hell, even a year after it became clear to anyone with half a brain that Brown’s death was justifiable, there were still protesters in New York waving anti-Darren Wilson signs.

“People have had enough of the anti-cop protest, and it’s time these people go get a job and find a different agenda,” Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins said in an interview with Fox News. “It’s just the arrogance of the whole thing. This is a naysayer group. If there’s a bit of intelligence put into any of this, they’d realize all their facts are incorrect.”

Ah, but there’s the rub. There is no intelligence in this movement. This is about whipping low-information liberals into an emotional frenzy, and you don’t need anything as superfluous as facts to do that. If this was anything other than a black movement, the media would have dismissed it as a fringe group of conspiracy theorists a long time ago. But since we have to give credence to minority complaints, no matter how idiotic they are, we’re still dealing with it in the waning months of 2015.

West also said that the goal of #RiseUpOctober was to force change in a justice system that “disproportionately criminalizes people of color.” As if black people are being forced to commit crime. There’s no choice in the matter. No one’s responsible for their actions, except for police.

And even though this flies in the face of all rational logic, the president of the United States tells us that we have to treat these morons as if they have something of value to offer the country. Speaking at a crime conference at the White House, President Obama said Thursday that “we as a society, particularly given our history, have to take this seriously.”

In one respect, he’s right. When a group can invent a narrative out of whole cloth, hijack the mainstream media, and put police officers in grave danger, we absolutely have to take it seriously.

But that’s probably not what he meant.
