(TotalConservative.com) – President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that “it remains to be seen” whether or not the development of artificial intelligence technology is actually dangerous.
The president spoke at a meeting held with the Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) discussing the subject of AI and stated that “it remains to be seen” if the technology is dangerous, although he also clarified that “it could be.” PCAST is made up of outside experts who are tasked with making policy recommendations to the federal government regarding science and technology innovation.
Biden said it’s the responsibility of tech companies to make sure their products are safe before releasing them to the public, and that potential risks must be addressed. He brought up social media as an example, stating that such technology “has already shown us the harm [it] can do without the right safeguards in place.” Without such safeguards, Biden said that “we see the impact on the mental health and self-images and feelings and hopelessness, especially among young people.”
He called on Congress to find common ground on this issue by passing bipartisan privacy legislation to impose limits on what personal data tech companies are permitted to collect and which would also require these companies to prioritize health and safety in their products.
Many Democrats and Republicans both agree that something should be done to keep AI in check, although what those solutions will look like remains uncertain. The issue is becoming a major point of discussion following an open letter released by the Future of Life Institute. The letter, titled “Autonomous Weapons Open Letter: AI & Robotics Researchers,” was signed by over 1,000 leaders in the tech industry, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak.
“AI can help deal with some very difficult challenges,” Biden said, “like disease and climate change,” but that the “potential risks” to society, the economy, and national security must also be addressed.
