Liberal Democrats thrive on identity politics, which is why they get so frustrated when any particular group – be it blacks, Hispanics, gays, immigrants, what have you – votes out of sync with they way they SHOULD vote. Which is, invariably, for the Democratic Party, of course. The only people who should be voting for Republicans are evil, Christian white men who want to turn the United States into some weird version of “The Handmaid’s Tale” and enslave everyone who isn’t just like them. Everyone else ought to be gathered, hand in hand, to fight this racist menace. If you aren’t, well, there’s something terribly wrong with you.

Democrats are extremely irritated right now with white women. They were counting on white women to turn the midterm elections into a Big Blue Wave, and it was because of them that it never really got off the ground. This brought a lot of resentment back from the 2016 election, where again, white women were supposed to lock arms and vote in solidarity for Hillary Clinton, helping her break that big glass ceiling in the sky. And instead, they mostly voted for Trump.

That still sticks in the craw of CNN contributor Kirsten Powers, who said Friday that she didn’t want to hear white women claim to not be racist. Because if they were voting for Trump, that said all that needed to be said about their racism.

“They’ll say, ‘Well, I’m not racist. I just voted for him because, you know, I didn’t like Hillary Clinton,” Powers sneered. “And I just want to say that that’s not–that doesn’t make you not racist. It actually makes you racist. If you support somebody who does racist things, that makes you racist. So, I want to establish that.

“As for why white women do it,” she continued, “I think we have to recognize that white men are doing it as well, but I think sometimes we would hope that we would get better behavior from white women, because white women are themselves oppressed and that they would, therefore, be able to be aligned themselves with other oppressed people.”

We would hope that we would get better behavior from white women. Wow.

“But,” she concluded, “I think we have to remember that the white patriarchal system actually benefits white women in a lot of the ways, and they’re attached to white men, who are benefitting from the system that was created by them, for them and their fathers and their husbands and their brothers are benefitting from the system, and so they are also benefitting.”

So there you have it. If you voted for Trump, and if you vote for Republicans, you’re a racist trying to hold on to your ill-gotten, white supremacist gains. This is what passes for meaningful commentary on CNN. Terrific.
