In a tweet this weekend, former FBI Director James Comey (who still maintains that he is – or was at some point – a Republican) issued a plea to Democrats to eschew the socialist left takeover that is quickly enveloping the party. Hoping against hope that Democrats can still see that fabled blue wave come to fruition in November, Comey said that American voters were looking for moderate leaders who could fill the vacuum left by today’s GOP.

“Democrats, please, please don’t lose your minds and rush to the socialist left,” he wrote. “This president and his Republican Party are counting on you to do exactly that. America’s great middle wants sensible, balanced, ethical leadership.”

Comey’s tweet built upon another one he wrote last week, in which he accused Republicans of failing to live up to the vision of the Founders.

“This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that ‘ambition must…counteract ambition,’” he wrote on July 18. “All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences don’t matter right now. History has its eyes on us.”

Sounds like someone’s scared that a Republican-controlled Congress, given enough time, will finally get to the bottom of the abuses of the FBI and the DOJ and expose what was really going on inside the Obama administration during the 2016 election. Whether Comey is afraid for himself or his buddy Bob Mueller, who can say? But Comey is undoubtedly a big part of the government machine that is trying desperately to give cover to itself after getting caught in an unethical and likely illegal spying campaign against a political adversary.

As for Comey’s concerns about the Democratic Party, they are well-founded. In the wake of Bernie Sanders’ shocking campaign of 2016 and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s surprise upset in New York City, the party’s youth are flirting with socialism in a major way. The movement is shrouded under the Democratic Socialist of America movement, which has endorsed more than 40 Democrats across the country. How those burgeoning socialists will fare in the upcoming elections remains to be seen, but it is a matter of plain and simple fact that they are trying their best to take over the party. Of course, Democrats – by playing to this constituency during the Obama years – brought this on themselves. It didn’t come out of nowhere.

We’d love to see Democrats “lose their minds” and blow the midterms, but there is this nagging voice in the back of our heads that fears this socialist revolution can attract more Americans than we might believe right now. This is the same country that fell for Obama’s carny act twice in a row, after all. The same country in which millions of Americans actually believe Donald Trump is a Russian agent/Hitler-in-the-making. Overestimating our collective ability to exercise good judgement would not be wise.
