You knew from the start there was something sinister behind the crash of that Russian airliner that claimed the lives of 224 people. It’s one thing for aviation officials to spend weeks and months speculating about the cause of a crash when the parts are strewn about the ocean. It’s quite another to delay the findings when there is ample access to both the debris and the black boxes. Put that together with the timing – the tragedy comes only a couple of weeks after Putin began raining hellfire down on the enemies of Assad in Syria – and it just seemed too suspicious.

Well, now the reports are starting to come in, and they say that it was indeed a bomb that brought down the Russian Airbus in the Sinai Peninsula. The UK government announced Wednesday that it had “become concerned that the plane may well have been brought down by an explosive device.” Subsequent intelligence reports have backed up that idea, but they were unnecessary for anyone trying to figure out what might be true of the crash. A Western government isn’t going to call a crash a terrorist attack, even in speculation, without rock-solid evidence.

So that gives us, by body count, the worst terrorist attack since the disaster that was September 11, 2001. Because it targeted Russian civilians and not Americans, we won’t treat it with the gravity it deserves. But make no mistake about it, this is a sign that ISIS (or one of its affiliate groups) has strengthened both its resolve and its reach. This is an attack on the scale of Al Qaeda, carried out by Islamic radicals who want to bring about the end of days. That’s not poetic exaggeration; this is really what they want.

The Islamic State’s Egyptian wing, a group called Sinai Province, has claimed responsibility for the attack. “We, with God’s grace, are the ones who brought it down, and we are not obliged to disclose the mechanism of its demise,” a spokesman for the group said on Twitter.

Whether it was this group or that group of radicals hardly matters. What matters is that we treat this as the wake-up call that it is. These bloodthirsty Muslim psychopaths want to invite upon the world a final apocalypse, and they are willing to destroy as many innocent lives as they have to in order to achieve that vision.

Do you think it might be time to take them seriously? Or should we wait until they take down an American jet?
