On the John Catsimatidis radio show in New York on Monday, Democrat Sen. Bob Casey was on to discuss immigration, the budget, and the Russia probe. It was what Casey said on this final subject that attracted our attention because it seems to indicate something significant about what the Democrats may be expecting from Robert Mueller’s investigation.
“I don’t think we’ll know anywhere near the full story until he issues his report,” Casey said of the special counsel. “But once you get into the summer and you get close to the election, I think it’s a mistake for him to release it late. I think you should wait until after [the midterms are over].”
How very curious.
Now there are a few reasons we can think of that might inspire Casey to think this way. The most benign of them: He doesn’t. He’s putting on a show and trying to distance the Russia probe from the politics that it so obviously entails. Perhaps he understands that a fair portion of this country believes that this entire investigation is ALL about politics and that a Mueller bombshell a few weeks before the election would only serve to strengthen that perception.
The other reason, though, is that maybe Casey knows what the final Mueller report is going to show. At minimum, it will prove conclusively that the FBI could find no evidence that the Trump campaign worked with the Russians to “steal” the election away from Crooked Hillary. And so, as a most unwelcome October surprise, the Democrats would have to reckon with a legion of angry voters suddenly realizing that they’ve been lied to for nearly two years straight. It was an excuse all along – an excuse for letting the 2016 election go to a man who has never held public office in his life. Democrats, including Casey, know there is no explanation in the world that will salve that wound.
But even worse than a final report that shows “nothing” would be a final report that condemns members of the FBI and the Obama intelligence community for essentially framing a political opponent for treason. That would be the worst possible outcome for the Democrats and a stain on the Obama legacy that will be handed down for generations. It would be the biggest scandal in American history. And, judging from what we’ve seen thus far, it wouldn’t be the most far-fetched outcome, assuming that Mueller is interested in delivering a fair and impartial conclusion…which is far from assured.
There is, of course, a fourth possibility: That the Democrats want to save Mueller’s big final report for the election that really matters, the one in 2020. Maybe Casey is just hoping his party can wring another two years of nonsense out of this fraud before they have to give it up and walk away.
We really hope that is not what ends up happening.
