Two Democrats in Maryland announced this week that they will push for a bill requiring any presidential candidate to release five years of tax returns to qualify for the state ballot. And just so no one misses the target of this legislation, they’re calling it the Tax Returns Made Uniformly Public – aka, the TRUMP Act.

Or…TRMUP Act, as the case may be.

“We all expected anyone who is going to be in front of the public and lead our nation would be transparent,” said Maryland Sen. Paul G. Pinsky. “He chose not to be, and we want to make sure that doesn’t happen again in the future from any candidate.”

Democrats thought they could nail Trump on his refusal to release his tax returns, and they’re still angry and confused about the American public essentially saying, “Yeah, we don’t care.” So if the voters aren’t smart enough to demand a candidate’s taxes, then by god, the Democrats are going to step up to the plate and look after all of those stupid sheep. That’s their job, right? Sure it is. They are the wise shepherds of American democracy, using their superior intellect to care for everyone who can’t care for themselves. What would we ever do without them?

Maryland Republican J.B. Jennings said it should be left to the voters to make up their own minds about a candidate’s transparency.

“To me, it just looks like sour grapes over the election,” said Jennings. “We don’t reveal our tax returns as legislators. Why are you doing it for the president and not every other office too?”

Similar bills are being considered in some other blue states, including California, Massachusetts, and New York. Keeping Donald Trump off the ballots in these states wouldn’t do anything to specifically change the outcome of the 2020 election, but it would turn his tax returns into a major story of the campaign.

This proposal is so blatantly partisan that it’s not even worth debating whether there’s any merit to the idea. Furthermore, we can’t have a situation where every state has their own little pet rules for who gets on the ballot. Imagine how the Democrats would react if the Texas legislature voted to keep any presidential candidate under federal investigation off their state ballots? And frankly, that proposal would make a lot more sense.

As far as the left is concerned, Trump’s election means democracy is somehow broken. Now they’re on a mission to fix it.

What could go wrong…
