(TotalConservative.com) – Over a dozen Democrats are seeking to amend the legal voting age, Fox News reports.
House Representative Grace Meng (D-NY) proposed the resolution. The resolution would repeal the 26th Amendment to the Constitution. The 26th Amendment grants voting rights to U.S. citizens aged 18 or older.
The proposition would give Americans aged 16 and up voting rights.. Allowing these younger demographics to vote would make it easier to enact leftist policies.
Vote16 USA argues four major reasons to repeal the 26th and allow 16-year-olds to vote.
Reason 1 argues that voting must be a habit and that early adoption of voting can enforce this habit. Reason 2 argues that 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds have all the civic knowledge required to vote. Reason 3 regards 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds as having a stake in politics, and demands that they must “equal constituents.” Finally, Reason 4 argues that decreasing the legal voting age would increase civics education.
Republicans questioned the motion. The Washington Examiner criticized the idea that, while 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds are too young to attend an R-rated movie without an adult, they will now be trusted with civic duty.
Activists argue that today’s 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds are better informed about politics than previous generations.
Efforts to amend the Constitution follow suit with liberal sentiments that the Constitutional is “broken.” In a recent, The New York Times guest essay, Dr. Ryan D. Doerfler and Dr. Samuel Moyn argue that the Constitutional needs to be made “more amendable.”
Liberal criticism of the Constitution has led some leftists, such as filmmaker Michael Moore, to even pen alternative amendments to the Constitution.
