If you’ve been surprised by the media’s overwrought, he-can’t-do-anything-right coverage of President Donald Trump’s response to Hurricane Maria, rest assured there is a method to the madness. Moreso than any other “scandal” of this administration, the left sees political opportunity in Puerto Rico’s disaster, and they are working overtime to take advantage of the confusion.

First things first: From all factual, unbiased reports, it appears that the Trump administration is literally doing everything in its power to help Puerto Rico. Is it a perfect response? We don’t know. We’re not sure what a “perfect” response would look like. This was a major natural catastrophe on an island that took place after a one-two punch of contiguous U.S. hurricanes that were already draining federal resources. We’d say the fact that there has been ANY recovery effort, much less an excellent one, is cause for celebration.

But you won’t hear any of that from the media, which determined from the get-go that this would be Trump’s Waterloo. After ignoring the hurricane’s effects altogether for more than a week, the left finally decided that there was political hay to be made from Trump’s response to the tragedy. And they got San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz to fire the opening salvo. Trump (unfortunately) took the bait, fighting back against the criticism on Twitter and signaling to the mainstream media that they had a live one.

At this point, Trump could singlehandedly rescue every Puerto Rican on the island, turn on the power, and shack everyone up at Trump properties around the world, and it wouldn’t make a difference politically. The left doesn’t let up once it gets its teeth into a controversy, regardless of whether or not there’s any truth to their claims.

In this case, as Politico points out, there is too much at stake for Democrats to play it straight:

As Puerto Rico slips deeper into what many call a humanitarian crisis following Hurricane Maria, the island is primed for a mass exodus of what could be 1 million people — a sizable number of whom are expected to settle in Florida, the nation’s biggest swing state.

That could well prove to be a boon to Democrats in a state which the past four top-of-the-ticket races have been decided by about a percentage point.

“It’s going to mean a lot more people voting Democrat in Florida,” Marco Rigau, president of the San Juan municipal assembly, told POLITICO Wednesday, a week ahead of President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to the commonwealth. “Puerto Ricans don’t like President Trump. When he shows on Tuesday, he’ll say ‘The Puerto Ricans love me’ because people won’t be picketing. But he has no idea.”

The plan is in motion. Send Puerto Ricans to Florida, get them registered to vote, and turn one of the major battleground states solidly blue for the 2020 election. That’s some heavy lifting, but the Democrats and the media are laying the groundwork. They’re telling Puerto Ricans – the ones coming to Florida and those already there – over and over, 24/7, “Trump hates you and your commonwealth.”

The tragic part is…how far will the president’s enemies go to convince people of this narrative? Would they sabotage recovery efforts?

This needs to be watched closely, because we don’t put anything past this desperate, pathetic party.
