In an interview with Fox News Sunday, acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney promised that House Democrats would “never” get their hands on President Trump’s tax returns.

Accusing Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee of pulling a “political stunt” in demanding Trump’s tax returns from the IRS, Mulvaney said that every Democrat in the House knew full well that they were barking up an empty tree.

“That is not going to happen, and they know it,” Mulvaney said.

When asked if Democrats would ever view the president’s tax returns, Mulvaney said, “Oh, no, never. Nor should they.”

Democrats have turned the president’s tax returns into their latest variation on what Trump calls “presidential harassment,” as they are eager to turn the page on their failed claims of a Grand Russian Conspiracy. Now they hope to start digging through years’ worth of Trump’s taxes to find something – anything – they can use to once again spark headlines and cast aspersions on the president’s finances.

In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press this weekend, Sen. Mitt Romney, who has been as critical of Trump as any liberal, said that he found the latest machinations by House Democrats to be “moronic.”

“I’d like the president to follow through and show his tax returns,” Romney said. “But, I have to also tell you, I think the Democrats are just playing along his handbook, which is going after his tax returns through a legislative action – it’s moronic. That’s not going to happen. So, he’s going to win this victory. He wins them time after time.”

Democrats may feel that they have a winning hand even if they are blocked from getting the tax returns. At that point, they can go to the American people and make all kinds of specious claims about Trump’s dirty financial background – “what is he hiding from you?” – and see how it plays on the campaign trail. Our guess is…not so great. They would do well to remember that this was already a major issue in the 2016 election, and the voters answered it with a gigantic collective shrug. We don’t see any reason why it would be any different today.

Well, actually, there is one. Because we’ve been through the witch hunt and back, voters now know that just because the Democrats and the media say Trump is guilty of something, it doesn’t actually mean that he is. So if they’ve learned anything at all from this ordeal, they may be even less susceptible to the whole “what is he hiding?” routine.

But, you know, without bashing Trump, the Democrats would actually have to run on their policies. And from what we’ve seen of those lately, they might be better off shouting “Russia” until their voices go hoarse.
